City of Aurora pioneer and founder Joseph McCarty’s first impressions of the shimmering Fox River and the lush land so enchanted him that he immediately sent for family and staked a settlement on now-called Stolp Island.

Established in 1857, how could McCarty possible have ever dreamed that his beloved hamlet would one day grow to become the second largest city in Illinois, with a booming population of over 175,000?

Downtown Comes Alive!
Mayor Tom Weisner has committed $5 million to begin the first phase of design and construction of RiverEdge Park-a planned 30-acre park along the Fox River in downtown Aurora-slated to transform the “City of Lights.”

Plans for the exciting RiverEdge Park, poised to revitalize the downtown area and create a dynamic public gathering place, include an outdoor music venue with lawn seating (total capacity 6,000), a botanical garden, a wetland and environmental education center, a public market and a brand-new pedestrian bridge linking the east and west banks of the dazzling Fox River.

“RiverEdge Park is part of an integrated plan to revitalize downtown Aurora, expand our tax base, and create new jobs and opportunities while at the same time preserving open spaces along our riverfront,” said Weisner. Read the rest of this entry »

Chef Jeremy LycanChef Jeremy Lycan of Niche began his career at the age of 15 working in a small bistro restaurant in his hometown and starting a small in home catering business. He began an apprenticeship with a Chef who trained Lycan for the next 5 years working in several different styles of kitchens including fine dining, country club and catering. At age 19 he enrolled in the Culinary School at Kendall College, Evanston campus. While in school he studied classical French cuisine along with contemporary and world cuisines. Chef Lycan interned at the Four Seasons Hotel and had the opportunity to work his way through all of the restaurants culminating with a position in the Fine Dining Room. Upon his return to Kendall College from internship, he worked at several small restaurants in the North Shore of Chicago.

Upon completion of his degree, he was hired by Chef Joel Findlay at 302 West in downtown Geneva. Working under Joel’s closely watchful eye for the next three years, Jeremy honed his skills in Contemporary American cuisine. He then moved to the San Francisco Bay Area and began working as an Associate Instructor at the California Culinary Academy and quickly became trained to instruct courses including Garde Manger, Baking & Pastry and the Senior Dining Room. Within 2 years Lycan was selected to become Chef Instructor of the Foods of the Americas class, an anthropological and culinary study of cuisines spanning the southern tip of South America through the United States. He then returned to Geneva as Executive Chef of 302 West until its closing months before the opening of Niche.

“The very essence of why I became a chef is the fact that on a daily basis I get to make people happy,” he says.  “Food nurtures not only the body but also the soul, a great dining experience will last for a long time in some ones memory.  One of my greatest joys is watching a plate of food set down in front of a customer.  Watching their initial reaction to the plate presentation and then the look of true pleasure in their eyes as they eat makes me understand that we are in the business of creating lasting memories.”

“When I am not behind the stove at Niche, I enjoy spending time with my family.  My daughter was born just weeks before the birth of Niche.  I and my wife look forward to watching my daughter grow up along with the restaurant.  Every chef needs to have something to take their mind off of the constant responsibility of maintaining the high standards of the fine dining experience.  For me, it is my time spent with my family and in the outdoors on the golf course.”
